Photoluminescent materials consist of inorganic
chemical compounds, which are referred to as photoluminescent pigments, and are
encased in flexible or rigid strata, or dispersed in a liquid form, such as
paint. Photoluminescent pigments consist of crystals of aggregated elements and
other agents. The crystals undergo certain changes when they are exposed to
light. Furthermore, these crystals have the ability to store light photons,
becoming luminescent over time. After the crystals are charged, they will remain
excited and continue to emit light even after the light source is removed. Over
time, the energy stored in the crystals will continuously dissipate until its
complete depletion; the material can be recharged by re-exposure to light.
